Getting Married in NZ: The essential details -
What documents do we need?
NZ law requires that you make a statutory declaration, in person and with a three month time frame before the wedding, stating that there is no lawful impediment to the marriage, in the presence of a Registrar of Marriages in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch where you will also collect your marriage licence. This must be on a weekday prior to your wedding. (If you arrive over a bank holiday or over Christmas and New Year this can be arranged at New Zealand House in London.)
Standard NZ Marriage Licence
Once your marriage has been officially registered in Wellington (this takes about 30 days after your wedding) we can then apply for a "Standard NZ Marriage Certificate" on your behalf which will be couriered to your home.
How long do we need to be in NZ before the ceremony?
As all documentation is pre-arranged you only need to arrive in New Zealand 3 days prior to your wedding to allow time on a weekday to collect your licence and make statutory declaration in either Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland.
How many witnesses are needed, if any?
Two witnesses are required by New Zealand law. You can appoint two of your guests to sign your marriage documents, or if you are coming to New Zealand alone, our professional co-ordinator on the day will act as one witness and we will arrange for one other.
