Northern Islands (Savu Savu & Taveuni)

Vanua Levu, (accessible by short flight from Nadi) Fiji’s second largest island is a blending of the best attributes that Fiji possesses. Warm and hospitable people, sugar cane fields, pine forests, fabulous rainforests, swaying coconut groves, copra plantations, sandy beaches and bays all flanked by one of the world’s longest barrier reefs. This is the island you come to for a really untouched authentic Fijian experience, if you are looking for activity there is a number of resorts and yachts offering amazing snorkelling and diving and also treks in the rainforest to stunning waterfalls. The beaches are not as long and white as on the Western islands but the waters are full of beautiful fish and corals and the resorts are located on the best beaches the island has.

A further hop by plane from Savusavu, Taveuni is the fourth largest island in Fiji stretching for 42 kilometres in length and is 15 kilometres wide. The island is smothered in prolific tropical rainforest and girthed by beautiful and bountiful tropical reefs harboring some of the world’s best dive sites. The birdlife is prolific from your average wild chickens to the more exotic kula lorikeets, red breasted musk parrots, honeyeaters, silktails goshawks, ferntails and orange-breasted doves, making the island a bird-watchers paradise. Due to its 1000 metre high volcanic ridge the prevailing trade winds ensure that rainfall is prevalent and often torrential, in turn ensuring that this Garden Island receives the rainfall required to maintain her cloak of vivid green making is a wonderful base for trekking through the rainforest and swimming in the pools of waterfalls.

Just a short boat ride from Taveuni is Qamea Island Resort and Matangi Island resort, two of our favourites as they offer a really authentic experience with rustic but charming accommodation, lovely beaches and a friendly welcome. One of these islands offers a great combination with a western island.
The rainfall is mainly between December and April so we’d recommend visiting these islands between May and November.
