Cruising and Sailing

There are many parts of the world where the advantages of exploring a destination by sea far outweigh travel by land. Apart from only having to unpack on day one of the trip, cruise ships can often access regions that are difficult to reach by other means – the Australian Kimberley, which you can experience in luxury on the expedition ship Orion for example and the Pacific coast of Canada and Alaska, on the itinerary of Cruise West and other companies, are just two examples that spring to mind. Of the many other options afloat, you can cruise along the mighty Mekong river in Asia, sail in the wake of Gauguin from Tahiti to the Marquesas, enjoy a trip to the Great Barrier Reef or potter around New Zealand’s Bay of Islands on a luxury yacht, even sail all the way to Asia, Australia, New Zealand or North America by ship. Whatever floats your boat…

With more than a million Brits a year now choosing to cruise, many who are planning to travel Down Under may want to inject at least a little ‘bow wow’ into their holiday itinerary. The advantages - seeing a lot in great comfort without having to repack and reaching remote parts of the coast - are well documented but what many people don’t realise is how cruising represents such good value, with prices that include transport, all meals, excursions and accommodation. You can choose from classic cruise ships to luxury expedition vessels such as Orion or True North plus smaller vessels like Coral Princess in the Barrier Reef islands or DecaradaA charters in the Whitsundays.

We can arrange short cruises in the Bay of Islands and along the deeply indented fjord coastline of the south west plus longer cruises that explore the entire length of New Zealand’s coast.

You can cruise Canada’s Atlantic seaboard, especially appealing on an itinerary timed to coincide with the regions spectacular Fall colours. But our most popular cruises follow the fabled Inside Passage from Vancouver to the fjords coastline of Alaska, with sightings of whales, bald eagles and calving glaciers on the sightseeing agenda, backed by a number of soft adventures such as kayaking, helicopter and floatplane jaunts, sport fishing and white water rafting.

Can't make your mind up which island to visit? Then consider taking in several on a cruise, with the added bonus of never having to repack. Choose between, for example, a trip on the Aranui, a working cargo ship that sails from Tahiti to the remote Marquesas where Gauguin painted, a private charter on a 72 foot motor yacht based at the spectacular island of Bora Bora, or a choice of itineraries aboard a Blue Lagoon cruise in and around the Fijian Yasawa islands.

You can choose to cruise on a conventional ship, with several companies offering a range of ports of call in different countries, or opt for a journey on a small vessel. These include a potter around Halong Bay, a unique, bizarre seascape of a thousand islands and islets, on board your own private junk, or a meander along the Mekong Delta by converted rice barge.

A private, tailor-made cruise is the best way of discovering the islands and inaccessible coasts around Madagascar’s Nosy Be Archipelago – and surprisingly affordable.  Visit villages untouched by the 21st century, explore uninhabited islands, snorkel and fish from your private mono-hull or catamaran. Or embark on an 11-day luxury cruise from Mauritius to Cape Town, via Madagascar and the spectacular coastal scenery of South Africa, on board the Silver Wind. For a quintessentially African cruise, board the intimate Zambezi Queen for a luxurious river safari on the Chobe River.
