The Coromandel Peninsula’s unspoiled coast, with native Pohutukawa trees on the western side and white sandy beaches on the east, offers opportunities for fishing, diving, boating, surfing and swimming, while the rugged volcanic hills are cloaked in native rainforest making it a haven for walkers. The Coromandel's history is evident in mining relics, logging dams and ancient Maori pa sites. The natural beauty and peaceful environment has made it a haven for artists and craftspeople.
Highlights include a 2-hour return walk, or a guided kayaking trip, to the white sands and arches of Cathedral Cove. It’s an idyllic place to swim, snorkel, picnic or simply relax under the pohutukawa trees.
Hot Water Beach lives up to its name. For two hours either side of low tide, you can create your own hot pool by digging into the sands. The hot spring bubbling up through the sand is the legacy of an exciting volcanic past.Be guided by a local and join small group tour, which combines kauri forest walks with an 1890s gold mining town. You’ll see glow worms, and learn about the flora and fauna of this magical area and the contrasting coastline of beaches – including the famous thermal sand pools at ‘Hot Water Beach’ - cliffs and off-shore islands.
