Overview

Most visitors to Cambodia will make this fascinating country, with its rich French and Khymer heritage, part of a grand Indochina itinerary, probably flying into Phnom Penh from Saigon. As an alternative, you could approach by road/speedboat via Can Tho and Chau Doc, or by luxury cruise boat through the Mekong Delta from Saigon to Phnom Penh.. Cambodia can also be a side trip from various airports in either Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore.

Day 1 Phnom Penh

Highlights of the old French colonial riverside capital include the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, markets, Buddhist temples, museums and colonial mansions. In contrast, the horrific Tuoi Sieng Genocide Museum is housed in an old secondary school that was transformed by Pol Pot into Security Prison 21. Spend the night at Raffles Le Royal hotel.

Days 2, 3 and 4 Siem Reap

Continue your journey with a flight to Siem Reap (alternatively, you could start your itinerary here). Siem Reap is the gateway to the 1000 year old Angkor temple/palace complex, including Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument and most important Hindu-Buddhist shrine of the ancient Khmer kingdom. In all, the area has more than a 1000 carved and sculpted temples, some almost buried in vegetation. Stay at the Hotel de la Paix, which is in part an art gallery, with its own curator; it also offers guests an iPod programmed with information to take to the temples although we will include two days’ private touring to these magnificent sites with one of our knowledgable local guides. Cambodia's less attractive heritage is the Khmer Rouge whose legacy of atrocities in which a million people lost their lives is showcased in a number of sights such as the Land Mine museum. We can also arrange a selection of additional tours such as a cruise on the Tonle Sap Lake, a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Angkor Wat or a cookery class.

Price 4 nights from £698 per person, including flights from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap (from £424 if you are just doing the 3 night trip to Siem Reap), private transfers throughout, a half day tour in Phnom Penh and 2 days’ private touring in the Angkor complex.
