Wilpena Pound Resort
Adelaide and South Australia - Flinders Ranges, South Australia
Covering 83 sq km in the remote section of the Flinders Ranges, 400km north of Adelaide, Wilpena Pound rises in stark contrast to the surrounding plains. The interior of the pound has long been popular with hiking and birdwatching enthusiasts and breathtaking fauna and flora abound.
The four-star Wilpena Pound Resort boasts a variety of accommodation options including 26 deluxe suites, 10 of which have cooking facilities. All rooms are well-appointed and feature ensuite bathroom, television and air-conditioning. There are several outdoor barbecue areas for families and all deluxe units boast outdoor dining facilities.
The Resort offers a choice of a la carte menu and a bistro bar as well as a General Store where light snacks can be purchased.
The best way to explore the Pound is by air on one of the Resort’s scenic flights which last from 20 minutes to a full-day excursion. Once airborne, you realise what a geological wonder Wilpena is. The rim is actually the stumps of massive mountains, eroded down from a height that once approximated the Himalayas. This is all that remains of a huge dome of rock that was pushed up from the ocean bed 650 million years ago. To explore the 'Heart of the Flinders Ranges' at ground level, bushwalking and four wheel drive tours are also available.
