North Bundaleer Homestead
Adelaide and South Australia - Nr Clare Valley, South Australia
Completed in 1901, North Bundaleer is a grand pastoral homestead, registered on the National Estate and situated on 400 acres of native bushland and farmland adjacent to the Bundaleer Forest, the birthplace of Australian forestry in 1876. The nationally significant sandstone homestead is rich in the architectural heritage of its formal rooms, hand-painted original wallpapers, lead-light windows and fireplaces.
The homestead has been meticulously restored from the brink of extinction, having not been occupied for 25 years, to its former glory by Marianne and Malcolm Booth over a period of three years. The interior decoration is elegant but eclectic with many antiques and works of art. Situated on what was described by the early pioneers as some of the best agricultural country in Australia, the property is two hours drive north of Adelaide, on the way to the Flinders Ranges and the Southern Outback.
Four beautifully appointed bedrooms, with ensuite facilities, central heating and extensive views of the surrounding gardens and countryside. The Red Room features a Georgian style canopy bed, adjoining Chinese Sitting Room and a contemporary ensuite bathroom built into the original conservatory. Inspired by the arts and craft movement, the William Morris Room has an antique brass bed, and incorporates the original homestead bathroom and claw-foot bath. The Blue Room overlooks the huge formal rose garden, and features an ensuite bathroom with a claw-foot bath in front of a working fireplace. The African Room has a more contemporary, savanna-inspired interior with a variety of antique African artefacts. Its King Size bed may be separated into two singles.
The Dining Room is dominated by an antique Irish Georgian table, and combines a sense of occasion with a convivial atmosphere, in which to appreciate fine food and wines. Relax in the elegantly appointed Drawing Room, or the Library with its eclectic selection of books, or on one of the shady verandahs around the homestead.
During your stay at North Bundaleer you can walk on the property with kangaroos and bird life in the natural Blue Gum environment, or on the nearby Heisen and Mawson Trails, Visit the historic mining town of Burra, the vineyards of the Clare Valley or the fishing ports of the Spencer Gulf, take a private tour and tasting at a Clare vineyard or meet local pastoralists and farmers to learn about their uniquely Australian way of life, depending on the season.
