All Bridge & Wickers holidays are tailor-made and no two are the same. We have made some accommodation suggestions, however we will tailor your quote to your preferred standard and style of accommodation.
One of the most exciting, and comfortable, ways to experience the magnificent Alaskan landscapes is to travel by train. Our one week itinerary below could also easily be combined with a cruise which disembarks in either Whittier or Seward.
Days 1 and 2 ANCHORAGE
Situated on the Pacific Ocean on Cook Inlet, on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness, Anchorage has some world class museums to visit, including the Native Heritage Centre which traces the history of the state from the earliest Native culture to the Russian fur traders and the eventual American purchase. Accommodation is the Hotel Captain Cook. On your second day you’ll enjoy a scenic ride on the Coastal Classic train around Turn Again Arm with its striking views of Kenai Peninsula, glaciers and marine life, and visit Seward for a wildlife and glacier cruise of Kenai Fjords National Park.
Day 3 TALKEETNA
Travel north by scenic train, featuring double decker dome cars, along the Chugach Range, across the Knik River Valley and into Alaska’s beautiful wilderness. After 3 hours you’ll arrive at Talkeetna, a charming pioneer town where you can take a river boat tour, go white water rafting, take a glacier flight or go hiking. Accommodation is at the Fireweed Station Inn.
Days 4 and 5 DENALI
Continue your journey by train, crossing the startling 918-foot Hurricane Gulch trestle some 296 feet above the creek below. Before arriving at Denali Park you will pass though Broad Pass, the highest point on the Alaska Railroad at 2,363 feet. At Denali you’ll continue by small aircraft through the awe-inspiring Alaska Range to the North Face of Denali and over a number of the north side glaciers before landing deep within the Park at the historic gold mining community of Kantishna. You’ll be staying at the Denali Backcountry Lodge where naturalists lead programmes and guided hikes.
Day 6 FAIRBANKS/ANCHORAGE
There’s a choice of ending your tour in Fairbanks or continuing to Anchorage. Either way your day begins with a wildlife tour by bus, with an onboard naturalist and guide, which will drop you in time to catch your train.
VIA FAIRBANKS Travelling via the scenic Nenana River Canyon, the train crosses the Tanana River on one of the world’s longest single-span bridges. Your ticket will give you access to the GoldStar upper level dome car, seating in the lower level dining room showcasing original Alaska artwork, and a private outdoor viewing deck – the only one of its kind in the world. Arriving into Fairbanks at 8pm, you will be transferred to Pikes Waterfront Lodge, located on a quiet stretch of the Nenana River and a great location to enjoy dinner on the riverside terrace.
VIA ANCHORAGE As with your trip north from Anchorage, there will be several scenic locations to stop at, as well as a last chance to glimpse Mt. McKinley before reaching Anchorage and a final night at Hotel Captain Cook.
