Niagara Falls is a welcoming little town that stretches along the Niagara River for about two miles. Although the majestic rumble of the falls can be heard from miles away, there is no preparation for the sight itself, a great arc of hissing, frothing water crashing over a 57m cliff amid dense clouds of drifting spray.
The best way to see the Falls is from above. Highlights of a trip by chopper include the Niagara River, Whirlpool Rapids, Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Falls, the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. A 9 minute flight costs from £81 per person. On the ground there’s the exciting option of a ride by jetboat that speeds up river for a unique 29km tour bringing you face to face with the Falls (from £43 per person).
Niagara can get very busy so it is well worth investing in the Great Gorge Adventure Pass (from £32 per person) that offers you admission to many of Niagara Falls most popular attractions while avoiding long wait times. Simply reserve a time that’s convenient for you and proceed to the priority entrance at your given time bypassing all line-ups (except Maid of the Mist, which eases right up to the Falls). Attractions include Maid of the Mist, White Water Walk, Journey Behind the Falls, Butterfly Conservatory, and the People Mover Bus and Falls Incline Railway.
Just 30 minutes down the scenic Niagara Parkway, you’ll find Niagara-on-the-Lake, a historic town packed with charming shops, galleries and heritage sites. We recommend you spend your nights in one of its charming historic inns, escaping the busy centre of Niagara Falls itself.
During your stay follow the wine route signs that will take you to a number of small boutique wineries, exquisite estates and superb restaurants. It’s one of the premiere wine regions of the world, boasting more than 40 varieties of grapes and more than 60 wineries. You can also match massive freighters navigate up to the Great Lakes via the Welland Canal.
