Kingston

Dubbed the ‘Limestone City’ due to the distinct buildings built of the local rock, Kingston is located on the south end of the Rideau Canal, with Lake Ontario providing a scenic backdrop for the city. The city is easily reached from Toronto (three hours, Hwy 401 eastbound) and Ottawa (two hours, Hwy 401 westbound). Set on a ridge overlooking the city is Fort Henry, an interactive museum of Canadian and British military history. In warm weather the view of the waters below, filled with sailboats and windsurfers zipping along the waves, is stupendous. Festivals such as the Annual Buskers Rendezvous and the Canadian Olympic Training Regatta keep the town hopping in summer, while students from the famed Queen’s University add a lively element throughout the school year. Visit Bellevue House National Historic Site, residence of Sir John A. Macdonald - Canada's first prime minister. The small Corrections Canada Museum provides an interesting albeit eerie chronology of the penal system in Canada.
