As we rolled on the big swell off the coast of Kaikoura and I tried to keep the contents of my breakfast in my stomach I was pretty sure the previous 30 minutes spent swimming with 40-50 dusky dolphins would be the highlight of my time in New Zealand. Five days later as I helicoptered up a remote valley from Lake Wanaka towards Minaret Station I realised how wrong I was. I can’t imagine a more spectacular way of getting to your accommodation and I defy anyone to not be wowed as you spot the small collection of tents in the distance.
The ‘wow’ factor continued throughout my stay at New Zealand’s first luxury tented camp with the next wow being the introduction to my tent. I use the word tent in the loosest sense of the word as this is glamping on a totally different scale. Wall to wall sheepskin carpet, king sized bed, full en-suite topped off with a hot tub on the deck over-looking your own private slice of paradise mean you will be more comfortable than in most hotel rooms. There is no need to worry about the chilly nights either as thanks to an electric blanket and heater I was blissfully unaware of the sub-zero temperatures outside. Oh, and don’t bother packing your camping stove as you will be treated to food on a par with any of New Zealand’s top lodges and due to the design of the Mountain Kitchen you can actually watch chef Luno in action. If you ask nicely he may impart some of his wisdom so you can impress your friends when you return home.
For all the luxury (which is definitely appreciated) it is the feeling of remoteness combined with the stunning scenery which make this such a special place. This is best experienced on one of the many guided walks on offer. Following paths created by cattle (who always find the easiest route!) guide Jerry is happy to take you as far as your energy levels allow and once you lose site of the camp you won’t spot any sign of human activity until it creeps into view again on your return journey. The eagle eyed should however see plenty of other life as deer and chamois roam wild across the station.
Using their unparalleled knowledge of the West Coast and Fiordland regions the team at Minaret can also arrange helicopter excursions to remote beaches, glaciers, fiords far from the tourist hot spots of Milford Sound or Franz Josef Glacier.
A completely unique property/experience as far as New Zealand is concerned Minaret Station would be a fantastic addition to any luxury itinerary. Contact one of our consultants for more information and to see how it can fit into your next holiday and I am sure it will be the highlight of your trip as it was mine.
