What is remarkable about Kangaroo Island, apart from having some weirdly shaped rocks named just that -The Remarkables. Well KI, as the locals call it, lies just south of Adelaide in the Southern Ocean and is a real treasure chest of flora and fauna. In the flora department there are the grass trees-some at least 1600 years old, whilst the fauna includes the hedgehog like Echidna which shuffle around in groups known as trains with dad in front and the family behind.
Then there is the man made jewel of KI, the appropriately named Southern Ocean Lodge, a sumptuous property perched on top of cliffs overlooking the ocean. Each of its 21 suites, a private haven of pure luxury, is named after a ship wrecked on the coast of SA, mainly in the 19th century (at least 21!).
What can be better than going to bed with the roar of the ocean singing you to sleep? Everything about the Lodge is designed with your comfort in mind, from the generously sized suites to the Great Room where guests gather in the evening to sample local produce canapés with a cocktail or two. Dinner is a feast of different tastes, ranging from the saffron champagne or ginger beer bread to the exquisite puddings, the main courses including ocean fresh fish or tender beef and lamb.
My next port of call was the genteel delights of South Australia’s Barossa Valley and the charm of The Louise, a boutique lodge that’s modest from the outside but sensational within. Here I dined in one of South Australia’s s best restaurants, Appellation, grazing to my heart’s – and stomach’s - content on the 10 course degustation menu. This sensational meal included 8 different wines, all from the Barossa Valley - which just also happens to be the home of one of the world’s most famous wineries, Jacob’s Creek.
Now if 10 courses sound a lot, then rest easy- they are small portions which each taste succulently different and the wines complement them perfectly. Peter the sommelier will explain just why he and the chef have chosen each one to fit and by the end of a long evening you will be in the mood for a comfortable night’s sleep in your cosy suite.
All in all South Australia has a brilliant blend of experiences that make a great holiday.
