Victoria is Australia’s second-smallest state, roughly the size of the British Isles. Packed into such a relatively – by Australian standards! - compact area is a diverse variety of scenery, wildlife and culture, from a sweeping coastline, pristine beaches, lakes, mountains, national parks and forests teeming with wildlife to wineries, heritage towns and a the country’s second largest city.

Make Melbourne your starting point. This vibrant city, according to many surveys, is one of the most liveable in the world. It has a mix of culture, with thriving Greek and Italian neighbourhoods, charming ‘laneways’ with boutique shops, galleries and restaurants and many interesting suburbs. There is so much to see within a short drive of Melbourne, all possible to visit for a day but much better linked together in a self drive tour around the state.

The most famous drive is along the Great Ocean Road which snakes past cliffs, waterfalls, rainforests, the site of historic shipwrecks and, most famously, the Twelve Apostles. Further north the Grampians National Park features rugged mountains with over 160km of walking trails, waterfalls, scenic lookouts, wildlife and wildflowers. South of Melbourne head down the Mornington Peninsula, a narrow stretch of land famous for its boutique wineries and food producers, plus beachside towns with antique shops, galleries, cafes and a variety of coastal walking trails. Or Philip Island, home to a variety of wildlife including the Little Penguins which arrive every day around sunset and can be seen in the Nature Park waddling up the beach to their burrows in the unforgettable Penguin Parade. If you enjoy wine, take a sidetrip to the Yarra Valley, just an hours drive north of the city. Further east the Gippsland Lakes region is perfect for a few days of  relaxed sailing.
