Central Australia is home to one of Australia’s most recognised natural icons and one of the great natural wonders of the world. The Uluru (Ayers Rock) monolith rises from the vast red desert plains, 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs and at 348-metres high. It is well worth a visit just to see the rock itself but there is much more to the Red Centre than Ayers Rock. An equally impressive site, 40 kilometres west of Uluru, is Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas - a massive pile of 36 weathered rock domes, estimated to be as old as 500 million years. Watarrka National Park, 300 kilometres to the north-east of Uluru, is best known for Kings Canyon - a mighty chasm that cleaves the earth to a depth of 270 metres. The sheer red rock face of the Canyon soars over 100 metres above cycad gardens and has countless walking trails, palm-filled crevices and stunning views across the desert.
Many tours combine these three highlights, starting or ending in Alice Springs, a thriving Outback town home full of heritage. It is well worth taking the time to visit the many aboriginal art galleries, the School of the Air, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Cultural Precinct and the Telegraph Station. Alice is framed by the West and East MacDonnell Ranges whose spectacular gorges and chasms set the scene for an exciting range of adventure activities, from hot air ballooning to quad bike riding, camel riding and trekking the Ranges stretch 400-kilometres on either side of Alice, providing a picturesque backdrop to the town and are a must visit if in the region.
