Tasmania is Australia’s smallest state, located off the south east coast accessible by flights from Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as ferry from Melbourne. Whatever way you arrive you could well feel you have arrived in another country travelled or travelled a step back in time. The flora and fauna are also very different from mainland Oz, the landscapes rugged and spectacular.
Hobart is a charming city steeped in history, being the second oldest in Australia after Sydney. Visit the many museums, the Salamanca markets on Saturday morning and, if time permits, take a seaplane flight into Tasmania’s remote and untouched south west national parks.
The west coast offers a combination of wilderness of the Franklin-Gordon Rivers National Park and convict history on Sarah Island, once a penal colony, both accessible by boat from Strahan. Cradle Mountain is home to iconic mountainous scenery with plentiful walking tracks with native wildlife at every turn…. Our favourites are the wombats! Launceston is your gateway to the Tamar Valley, home to some of Australia’s best Pinot Noir.
Tasmania’s east coast is famous for its stunning coastal scenery, particularly the Freycinet National Park, with pink granite mountains, pure white beaches, coastal dunes and dry eucalypt forests. Freycinet is famous for Wineglass Bay, just one of its white sandy beaches and waters that are perfect for sea kayaking, swimming and scuba diving. The Tasman Peninsula is located in the southeast corner of the island and is home to the world’s southern-most historic prison at Port Arthur where you’ll return to mid-19th century Van Diemens Land. Apart from these ruins, the Tasman National Park has some spectacular walks through forests, along sea cliffs and sweeping beaches.
