The Blue Mountains are a 90 minute drive west of Sydney and are famous for their one million hectares of World Heritage-listed landscapes with endless stretches of sandstone cliffs, dramatic waterfalls and hidden canyons. The distinctive blue haze which has earned the Blue Mountains its name is evident wherever you look, created by the rays of sunlight merging with the droplets of eucalyptus oil, dispersed from the millions of trees. One of the icons of the mountains is the Three Sisters rock formation at Katoomba’s Echo Point. You should also take a ride on the Scenic Skywalk, a glass-bottomed carriage that glides 270m above the valley.
Apart from relaxing and marvelling at the views there is plenty to do and see in the region, from bushwalking and abseiling to horse riding and visits to the Mount Tomah Botanic gardens. The mountains are home to a string of townships with a vibrant cultural community where artists, musicians and writers flourish. Enjoy great coffee at one of the cosy cafés in Katoomba or Leura.
