Blessed with abundant natural beauty, the Northern Territory’s Top End is a haven for nature lovers, especially those with a sense of adventure. And with over 1.4 million square kilometres of lush untouched landscape to explore, visitors to the region won't be disappointed.

Thrust into the spotlight in Baz Luhrmann’s latest epic blockbuster, ‘Australia’, NT’s vibrant capital Darwin is, like the rest of the Top End, full of surprises. Its harbour is twice the size of Sydney’s, and despite its positioning as the gateway to the Outback, this modern, tropical city is just four hours from Singapore.

The main reason for visiting this part of Australia is beyond the city with National Parks including Litchfield and dual World Heritage Listed Kakadu, plus the vast wilderness of Arnhem Land and the Katherine Region. At the heart of the Top End is, of course, is the rich Aboriginal culture which has existed in harmony with the land and shaped its history for tens of thousands of years. This legacy is still visible in the ancient rock art and contemporary galleries that punctuate the region as well as in the magical 'Dreamtime' stories, passed down through countless generations, which provide a gateway to understanding Aboriginal history and beliefs.

The rugged landscape and lush billabongs are a paradise for birdwatchers, keen fishermen and walkers while the open desert roads make for some awe inspiring drives around this ancient land.
The region can be reached by self drive but in our opinion is best explored on a small group safari, either staying in simple local accommodation or, to make the most of the vast Australian skies, we highly recommend a camping safari. The camp sites have permanent tents with proper beds with duvets and pillows and shower blocks but don’t expect luxury. The region also has some more exclusive lodges offering unique and very personalised experiences.
