The Coastal Drive from Sydney to Brisbane will pass sweeping beaches, sleepy villages and mossy rainforests and the picturesque inlets including Port Stephens and Coffs Habour. Byron Bay is a melting pot of surf culture, alternative philosophies and bohemian lifestyle, with plenty of art and craft shops and many award winning restaurants.
Drive south and you’ll walk pearly white beaches and see dolphins frolic in sparkling water in Jervis Bay. Meet grey kangaroos and cruise the pristine Clyde River in Batemans Bay. Try award-winning cheeses at Bega and watch whales in Eden on the Sapphire Coast, near the Victoria border. The South Coast has 30 national parks, marine parks and reserves, as well as gorgeous beaches and rich Aboriginal history for you to explore.
The little known but scenically dramatic Lord Howe Island, which is surrounded by reefs and stunning turquoise seas, is also an ideal place to visit if you want to spend time on a beach if you are visiting in our winter when the Great Barrier Reef islands are experiencing tropical wet weather. Aside from lovely beaches, snorkelling and diving, the island’s UNESCO-listed interior offers some great hiking options.
