The capital of Thailand straddles the Chaopraya river near the upper part of the Gulf of Thailand. It is a major port where seagoing ships steam upriver from the gulf to unload or load their wares. Bangkok is a sprawling city of around 10 million people and is an interesting mix of old and new, with a skyline which has boomed into place in a space of just two decades. Glittering temples vie for space with modern skyscrapers and hotels, while quiet back lanes carry the sounds of every day life.
It is an essential visit for any visitor to Thailand with plenty of things to see and do. Over the past few years Bangkok has developed a very green attitude and there are now many tree lined avenues providing a shady escape from the tropical sun. Parks have become an important part of the cityscape and Bangkok now boasts several large parks and green spaces where people can go to relax or exercise. The city is becoming one of the more charming on the Asian landscape.
During your stay we can arrange tours to include a visit to the dazzlingly intricate Grand Palace's sacred Emerald Buddha and neighboring Wat Pho's 46-meter-long Reclining Buddha. You can take a long-tail boat along the Chao Phraya River and down the back waters to observe life beyond the main city streets.
Shopping is a must do during your stay - Aromatic spices, fighting cocks and every Thai craft imaginable attract shoppers and people-watchers to the 15,000-stall Chatuchak Weekend Market. Sukhumvit Road’s shiny malls and boutiques are the go-to place for designer fashion, leather and a tailor-made silk outfit from Jim Thompson.
Thai food is a huge draw with cooks juggling woks on every corner, Bangkok is all about grazing for street food. the Phahurat Indian quarter's teahouses for authentic biryanis and curries or buzzy Chinatown for noodles stir-fried to perfection.
