The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 square kilometers, but most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end which acts as a natural physical barrier to most of the parks animal species and the reserve lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the river essentially forms one incredible wildlife sanctuary.
You’ll find many scenic channels leading off the main river and these are perfect for meandering down by canoe – especially in the dry season when animals tend to congregate near the river. Alternatively, choose a sundowner boat cruise, a guided bush walk or a game drive in an open 4WD with your expert guide. Another popular activity is tiger fishing on a catch and release basis.
The lodges tend to be more flexible with their timing than in other safari areas, and can put together a day of activities to suit your mood: wake up at dawn for a game drive, or sleep late and then go tiger fishing on the Zambezi - the choice is yours. But we recommend a stay of at least four or five nights in the area to try all the activities.
We’ll help you choose from the interesting range of accommodation on offer – from luxury lodges and tented camps overlooking the river to camping on Tsika Island right in the middle of the mighty Zambezi for the adventurous soul.
