Cape Town, Winelands, Garden Route and Safari

Itinerary Information

This itinerary is illustrative of the holidays we can offer. It can be tailored to suit your personal requirements by altering the places you stay and how long you spend in them.

Day 1
Arrive in Cape Town off your overnight flight. Collect a hire car and drive to your comfortable, stylish guesthouse, One On Queens for three nights, which overlooks Cape Town from its vantage point above the buzzy Kloof district of designer shops and trendy restaurants. For the real killer view, take the cable car up Table Mountain in the afternoon and see the entire Cape spread out before you.

Days 2 & 3
We suggest you devote one day to an excursion down the Cape Peninsula, enjoying the incredible, scenic Chapman’s Peak coastal drive, the penguins at Boulders Bay, Cape Point, Hout Bay and many other wonderful attractions.
On the second day, you could take a boat trip to Robben Island, explore Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, visit the beach at seductive Camps Bay, pass your time shopping and eating at the Waterfront.

Days 4 & 5
Take a short drive to the historic Winelands for two nights of wine tasting, magnificent landscapes and innovative, locally-sourced gourmet cuisine, staying at the Akademie Steet Guesthouse.

On your way, you might like to stop for lunch in 17th century Stellenbosch. Built in Cape Dutch style, Stellenbosch is a national monument and has more period buildings than any other South African town. You will also find an abundance of restaurants and wine-tasting opportunities.

The next day you might spend the morning walking in the vineyards and visit Franschhoek in the afternoon. Franschhoek was founded in the 17th century by French Huguenots fleeing persecution - who established the wine estates for which the region is famous. Today, this charming village has a plethora of fine restaurants.

Day 6
Depart after breakfast on a 5-hour meander along the incredibly scenic Route 62, travelling through a succession of mountain passes and tiny, sleepy villages fringing the Karoo. In the late afternoon, you arrive in Oudtshoorn, an important centre for the ostrich trade in Edwardian times. Here you can see, eat and even ride ostrich. Overnight at De Zeekoe and enjoy fresh, local Karoo cuisine. An early start should allow you to view a group of meerkats as they come out to greet the rising sun.

Day 7
Another scenic, but much shorter, drive takes you down to the coast at Wilderness and the famous ‘Garden Route’. Stop for lunch on the lagoon waterfront in Knysna; in the afternoon, you may like to take boat trip across the lagoon to Featherbed Nature Reserve and the Knysna Heads.

It’s a short hop along the coast to Plettenberg Bay where you stay for three nights at friendly, tranquil Hog Hollow Country Lodge, which has lovely rooms, a superb setting and great food.

Days 8 & 9
There is so much to do here, but you may simply want to laze by the pool at Hog Hollow, interrupted by the occasional forest walk in Tsitsikamma, a natural wonderland of stinkwood and yellowwood trees. Alternatively, visit the stunning beaches at Nature’s Valley, or at Plettenberg Bay, famous for its 10km of golden sand, and watch dolphins ride the waves. Plett, as its know has plenty of activities on offer, as well as very stylish shops and restaurants.

Days 10 – 12
A 4-hour drive takes you beyond Port Elizabeth to Amakhala, a malaria-free, 7000- hectare game reserve, for your three-night safari staying at luxurious Amakhala Bush Lodge. The plentiful game includes elephant, lion, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and many species of antelope, including eland, kudu and blesbuck.

Day 13
A short drive takes you back to Port Elizabeth where you return your car in the mid-afternoon and to Johannesburg or Cape Town to connect with your overnight flight back to the UK
