KwaZulu Natal encapsulates the sheer diversity of South Africa, from deserted beaches to towering mountains, superb safaris amidst a wealth of wildlife and great fishing, colonial history and Zulu culture – to say nothing of the pleasures of the Great Outdoors.
Day 1
Arrive Durban, where you will be met and collect your hire car. Breath the sea air and then set off for the Drakensberg (about 4 hrs) to stay 3 nights in a luxury room at Montusi Mountain Lodge, breakfast and dinner included.
Days 2 & 3
The Drakensberg is a World Heritage Site and is among the richest sites for San rock art. The Northern Drakensberg is particularly beautiful, a place of pristine mountains and valleys, South Africa’s highest peaks, rivers and forests. Its most dramatic geological formation is the Amphitheatre, a 5km-long rock wall in the shape of a crescent. The Tugela Gorge walk provides close-up views of the Amphitheatre and the 945m Tugela Falls, but you can watch the changing colours of the Amphitheatre from Montusi. Other possibilities include horse trails, discovering the paintings in Bushman Cave, swimming in streams and rock pools, fly fishing, adrenalin activities and guided walks on the Montusi estate.
Day 4
Depart for the Battlefields (about 3 hrs to the northeast) to stay 2 nights in a standard room at Isandlwana Lodge, all meals included.
‘Zulu’ means ‘heaven’ or ‘sky’ and the fertile hills of Zululand are as heavenly as the battles over them were both bloody and heroic. From Isandlwana Lodge, you can relive the battles of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars through compelling tours – on foot or on horseback – go birding, experience traditional, rural Zulu life and enjoy the splendid views.
Day 6
Set off for northern KwaZulu Natal (about 4 hours) for a 3-day safari in a river suite at Amakhosi Safari Lodge, all meals, house drinks and two game-viewing activities per day included.
The 12,00ha Amazulu Private Reserve contains savannah, wetland and mountain terrain and the game viewing is very good. Expert guides lead you on game drives and walking safaris; or will take you birding so you can tick off some of the 450 recorded species. Amakhosi’s special frogging “safaris” reveal the often-overlooked amphibians of the eco-system (Nov – Mar).
Day 9
Continue your journey, southeast to M’bibi (about 3½ hrs), for a 3-night stay in a standard room at Thonga Beach Lodge, all meals, teas/coffees, cultural tours, kayaking, sundowners at Lake Sibaya, guided walks, and use of snorkelling equipment included.
Recently designated a World Heritage Site, the sandy beaches of the Maputaland coast are among the most untouched in Africa. Leave time to savour their wild, untainted beauty. There are pristine seascapes to discover and superb turtle “safaris” from November through February; fabulous fishing and the opportunity to taste life in a traditional Thonga fishing village; lakes and coastal forests – with a huge diversity of flora and fauna - to explore by boat, kayak and on foot. . .
